Wildfire prompts evacuation of Wyoming Indian reservation town
FORT WASHAKIE, Wyo. About 100 firefighters in Wyoming are battling a wildfire that has forced the evacuation of an Indian reservation town. The fire has burned about 500 acres and destroyed at least one building on the Wind River reservation, near Lander.
One official estimates the fire was about five miles long. Another says flames fueled by dry brush are being fanned by 25 mile-per-hour winds.
All 250 residents have been taken to a Red Cross shelter. And there's no word on when they may be allowed to return.
