Smallest quintuplet in critical condition after surgery
PHOENIX The smallest of five quintuplets born last week to a surrogate mother is in critical condition after undergoing heart surgery. Javier Moreno, who's three pounds and seven ounces, made it through the six-hour procedure at Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Javier had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, where the left side of his heart is underdeveloped and can't pump blood properly.
Doctors say the survival rate for a full-term baby with this condition after surgery is 80 percent.
The quintuplets received international attention after Teresa Anderson _ a 25-year-old surrogate mother _ delivered the boys to a childless couple she met on the Internet.
