One person dies in group home fire
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A veteran has been killed and at least two other people were injured in a fire that engulfed a home with veterans in North Providence.
Police have identified the victim as Norman Thurston. The building's owner says Thurston was 68 years old.
The fire started sometime before 1:30 a-m and grew so intense that firefighters were ordered to evacuate the structure.
Another resident was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Mayor Ralph Mollis says one firefighter was treated and released from a hospital. Mollis says the home had eleven residents.
The state fire marshal says the fire began on the first floor.
Police believe it was started by a cigarette.
