New York man returns long overdue book -- with big fine
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. It was due February 27, 1981. More than 24 years later, a suburban Buffalo man has returned the book "The Joy of Camping" to the Orchard Park Public Library -- with a check for nearly 22-hundred dollars.
Joel Schlesinger says he found the book in his New Jersey attic a few months ago. Under the penalty from 1981, he would have owed a maximum fine of ten dollars. But the man said he felt he should have paid what he actually owed, given the library system's financial troubles.
The library's director says she had "no intention" of charging the full amount -- but the library accepted his donation.
Schlesinger says he hopes the library can use his money to "do some good things" -- like maybe buy more books.
