Expert says Providence police procedures apparently not unusual
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- An expert in police procedures from Salve Regina University says Detective James Allen was probably not doing anything unusual while questioning a suspect in police headquarters this morning.
Police say that suspectEstenban Carpiowas being questioned in a stabbing when he got his hands on Allens service weapon and shot the detective to death.
Michael Brady says every police station has areas called weapons secure, where weapons are banned.
Those areas generally include cell blocks and interrogation rooms, he says, but not areas such as detective conference rooms. Thats where police say Allen was killed.
Brady also says that while all uniformed police officers use specialized security holsters to make it difficult for a suspect to remove the gun, most plainclothes officers use simpler holsters that dont have a safety mechanism.
