East Providence residents told to boil water due to bacteria
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- East Providence residents are being advised to boil their water before using it due to the presence of harmful bacteria.
Yesterday, health officials found fecal coliform bacteria in East ProvidenceÔŅĹs public water supply.
The bacteria indicates the water may be contaminated with human or animal waste. Microbes in those wastes may cause health problems including diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches.
The microbes pose a special risk for infants, young children and those with severely compromised immune systems.
Health officials say water should be boiled for a minute and allowed to cool before itÔŅĹs used. They also say residents can use bottled water.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, food preparation and bathing infants until further notice.
