Utility regulators open review into commission's pension plan
WARWICK, R.I. State utility regulators say they're investigating a pension plan system that's about to take effect at the Narragansett Bay Commission. The bay commission's pension plan covers nonunion employees, and is due to take effect January First. But the Public Utilities Commission voted 2-0 yesterday to investigate it.
The PUC is concerned the pension plan could be costly and require the Bay Commission to raise its rates. The agency is asking the bay commission to provide documents, and says it will hold public hearings on the proposal's impact.
The Narragansett Bay Commission operates the two largest wastewater treatment plants in the state. It also is involved in the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement project, the largest public works project in Rhode Island history.
