A-P poll finds public faith in stable, democratic Iraq has slipped
WASHINGTON A recent Associated Press poll suggests most Americans now believe there's not much chance of getting a stable, democratic government in Iraq. The public's faith on this topic has slipped since last spring when 55 percent said they believed democracy was possible in Iraq. The figure dipped to 47 percent in the latest poll.
As a self-described political independent from Georgia says "you cannot beat people into freedom."
Despite the pessimism, the poll finds support for President Bush's handling of the Iraq war has increased the past six months. Opinion is now about evenly divided compared to June when 55 percent of people polled disapproved. In the latest poll, 50 percent disapprove and 48 percent are supportive.
The also poll suggests a split over Bush's handling of domestic issues.
