The Rev. Jesse Jackson urges students to stay involved
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The Reverend Jesse Jackson was at Brown University last night, speaking to students about the future of the Democratic Party and the recent presidential elections.
The civil rights leader called for a national voting system and elimination of the Electoral College. He also urged the crowd to stay involved in the political system, even if they are disappointed by President Bushs defeat of Democrat John Kerry.
Jackson says the Electoral College is an anachronism that limits presidential campaigning to so-called battleground states where the race is seen as close.
He said the country needs a uniform national system of election standards to ensure that all voters are treated equally and that everyones vote is counted.
