Federal regulators say Providence storage area may be unsafe for LNG shipments
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Federal regulators say that the natural gas storage area at the Port of Providence may be unsafe for expansion. The opinions come in a preliminary report from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The assessment was done, because natural gas operator Keyspan wants to expand operations at the port to accept liquefied natural gas.
So-called LNG terminals proposed for Providence and Fall River have caused an intense debate locally and in Congress.
Keyspan's storage operation at Fields Point was grandfathered in under the 1979 Pipeline Safety Act. But regulators say the property is so small that heat radiated by a potential fire, or the flammable vapors released during an LNG spill might spread to other areas.
