Amtrak scrambles to find trains to cover Acela Express schedule
WASHINGTON Amtrak has been scavenging cars and equipment to get some high-speed Acela Express trains back on track today. Brake problems yesterday forced Amtrak to suspend high-speed service in the Northeast at least through Wednesday. The suspension could last more than two months.
The train service put together enough equipment to run four scheduled trips from Washington to Boston today.
A spokeswoman says it's not clear if Amtrak will be able to put together enough trains to fill the ten Acela trips scheduled tomorrow.
Amtrak usually runs 15 Acela weekday roundtrips between New York and Washington and eleven between New York and Boston.
Officials found cracks in 300 of the fleet's 14-hundred-40 disc brake rotors. The brakes are under warranty.
Acela accounts for about one-fifth of Amtrak's service along the Northeast corridor.
