Investigation turns up millions missing in Iraq
WASHINGTON Government investigators say U-S civilian authorities in Iraq can't properly account for nearly 100 (m) million dollars that was supposed to have been spent on reconstruction projects in south-central Iraq. That's the word from the Special Inspector General for Iraq reconstruction.
Government investigators say there's evidence of fraud with proceeds from Iraqi oil sales and seizures from the former government of Saddam Hussein. Seven (m) million dollars is unaccounted for. An additional 89-point-four (m) million dollars in payments do not have the required supporting documents.
The investigators accuse civilian contract managers of "washing accounts" in attempts to balance their books. The inspector general's report blames a number of factors, including staff shortages and high turnover.
