Bristol man acquitted on more serious charges in fatal crash
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Bristol man involved in a drag race accident two years ago that killed two people has been convicted on the lesser charge he faced.
Michael Cabral was acquitted in Providence Superior Court of two counts of driving to endanger resulting in death and one count of driving to endanger resulting in injury.
Convictions on those charges would have brought him a longer prison term than the maximum two years he faces for his conviction on conspiracy to commit reckless driving.
Prosecutors say Cabral was racing Brendan Lombardi in April, 2003 when LombardiÔŅĹs car struck a tree in Bristol. Two of LombardiÔŅĹs passengers died in the crash.
Lombardi struck a plea agreement and is serving a twelve-year prison sentence.
This was CabralÔŅĹs second trial. His first trial in March ended in a mistrial.
