Two congressional runoff elections being held in Louisiana today
BATON ROUGE, La. More than a month after other races were decided, two congressional seats are up for grabs today in Louisiana. The runoffs are the result of the state's open primary system. None of the candidates in these races received more than 50 percent last month, forcing the two top vote-getters in each district into a runoff.
There's a well-known name in one of the races.
Billy Tauzin the third is trying to win the congressional seat his father held for more than 20 years. He faces Democrat Charlie Melancon, a former state lawmaker who once headed the American Sugar Cane League.
The other race pits Republican Charles Boustany Junior, a retired heart surgeon, against Democratic State Senator Willie Mount.
Both races are said to be tight.
