New sign to mark historic cemetery in Newport
NEWPORT, R.I. Newport officials are gathering at a historic cemetery today to formally install a new marker. The sign will commemorate "God's Little Acre," a section of the Common Burying Ground, where many slaves, free Africans and their descendants were interred.
This section of the cemetery contains several hundred original burial markers from the 17th and 18th centuries -- a time when Rhode Island was active in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
The ceremony will be held at 11 this morning.
