Victims Advocate Added to Police Force
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The Providence Police Department has hired a new law enforcement advocate who will assist sexual assault and domestic violence victims. Cristina Costa will work in the Police Department's special victims unit to provide crisis intervention and support to victims.
The Law Enforcement Advocates program is financed by the federal Victims of Crime Act of 1984. The program has served four regions in Rhode Island, but this is the first time in Providence. Providence police Chief Dean Esserman says the creation of the position falls in step with the Police Department's pledge to reach out to residents and be more compassionate and focused on victims.
The 25-year-old Costa was born and raised in Providence. She was selected from 35 applicants. She speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese.
