Thousands attend funeral for Rhode Island detective slain with his own gun
PROVIDENCE, R.I. An overflowing crowd of mourners filled a church and spilled onto nearby streets for today's funeral of a Rhode Island police detective. Detective Sergeant James Allen was killed Sunday after a suspect he was questioning allegedly grabbed the detective's gun and shot him with it.
Thousands of people, including many police officers and firefighters from around the country, attended today's funeral in Providence.
A police commander mixed humor and sadness in a eulogy about Allen's life, including how Allen got to know his wife while helping investigate a break-in at her house. He says Allen kept making excuses for follow-up visits.
