Catholics seek reform of U-S immigration laws
WASHINGTON Catholic groups are calling for more compassionate U-S immigration laws. Washington Cardinal Theodore McCarrick says immigrants strengthen rather than threaten America and should be welcomed along with their families.
To those who object to excusing illegal immigration, McCarrick says, "Let him or her who is without sin cast the first stone." He says most migrant workers just want to support their families.
The diocese's immigration services director, Celia Rivas (REE'-vahs), says current immigration laws divide families, leading to gang problems, domestic violence and mental health problems.
The Catholic "Justice for Immigrants" campaign will promote "legal status and legal pathways for migrant workers and their families."
