California Assembly committee rejects constitutional amendment banning gay marriages
SACRAMENTO, Calif. Committees of California lawmakers have rejected a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriages and strip away a long list of domestic partnership rights. Other laws already bar same-sex marriages from taking place in California. Still, conservative groups immediately said they would try to gather enough signatures to put an initiative banning gay marriage on the ballot in 2006.
The head of the Campaign for Children and Families called the rejection "a disturbing display of arrogance."
But an opponent said the proposed amendment amounted to "legalizing discrimination."
