New intelligence chief to be sworn in
WASHINGTON President Bush swears in a new director of the C-I-A this morning. Florida Congressman Porter Goss was approved by the Senate this week in a 77-17 vote, despite the reservations of some Democrats who worry that Goss, a Republican, may be too partisan for the job.
Through the summer, he was a key figure in congressional hearings on the recommendations made by the Nine-Eleven commission. While he has supported many of them, he has been critical of others, and has repeatedly urged his colleagues not to damage the nation's intelligence apparatus in a rush to correct the C-I-A's deficiencies.
Goss is an eight-term congressman and a former C-I-A operative.
