Surfer attacked by shark in Northern California; beaches closed
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

POINT REYES STATION, Calif. California park officials have closed two beaches following an attack by what's believed to be a great white shark.

Officials at Point Reyes National Seashore say a surfer was bitten on the leg Sunday just off Limantour Beach, about 50 miles north of San Francisco.

The surfer told authorities the shark was six to eight feet long and released his leg after he hit it on the head. The man then paddled to shore on his own.

He was taken by helicopter to a Santa Rosa hospital for treatment

The waters off Limantour Beach and an adjoining beach will be closed for five days. They'll be re-opened if no more shark sightings are reported.
