Arts groups get federal grant for redevelopment
PROVIDENCE, R.I. The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded nearly 170-thousand dollars to two Providence arts groups. A-S-220 and Perishable Theatre are receiving the funds to expand and improve a building they purchased in the capital city.
In 1993, the two organizations bought and renovated a derelict building in the Empire Street neighborhood. City officials had characterized it as part of urban blight.
Now it houses 26 tenants, including 11 residents, several art studios, a theater, a cafe and a performance space.
The facility now needs expansion and improvement.
