Online Drugs
HOLD FOR RELEASE at 4 p.m. EDT Study: Few Americans buy drugs online _ let alone from Canada NEW YORK (AP) _ A study finds few Americans are buying drugs online _ let alone from Canada.
The Pew Internet and American Life Project says only four percent of Americans have ever used the Internet to buy prescription drugs -- and even fewer do so through foreign pharmacies.
This comes despite Web sites maintained by a handful of states to help citizens import medicines more cheaply from Canada.
According to the poll, 62 percent believe drugs bought online are less safe than those purchased from a local pharmacy. That's the reason the government gives for opposing drug imports.
Experts note that the elderly people most likely to be needing prescription medications for chronic illnesses are also the least likely to have an Internet connection.
