Washington-AP -- The Census Bureau is reporting on the status of the nation's veterans for Memorial Day. The bureau says the poverty rate for vets is about half that of all Americans. Almost six percent of the country's 26 (m) million veterans lived in poverty in 2000, compared with eleven percent of all adults.
Service members leave the military with federal benefits such as education and job training, they get free health care for wartime injuries and they can get special home loan guarantees. Vets' groups say that all gives them a boost in the private sector.
A V-A spokesman says vets are attractive to employers because they are proven team players who value loyalty and dedication.
