House delays discussion on fire safety codes
(Providence-AP) -- House leaders will delay consideration of proposals to strengthen the state's fire safety codes until after a special commission releases its recommendations tomorrow.
The House was to consider a bill today that would mandate sprinklers in many nightclubs that serve alcohol and also ban pyrotechnics in such businesses.
Instead, the chamber will defer to the state commission, which is expected to make similar recommendations.
Legislative leaders want the House and Senate to approve the same bill on fire code changes before adjourning at the end of this month.
The state commission was set up after a February 20th West Warwick nightclub fire that claimed 100 lives.
The 17-member panel began meeting in March and heard repeated testimony about the need for stronger fire safety laws.
