White House upholds policy against gay discrimination, contradicts agency
Friday,April2,2004,7:29 AM
Washington-AP -- The White House says President Bush supports protecting gay federal workers from sexual orientation discrimination, even though the official he appointed to enforce that policy put it on hold. A White House spokesman says Bush believes, "no federal employee should be subject to unlawful discrimination." But he hasn't said what action, if any, would be taken to reconcile the two policies.
Yesterday a group of congressional Democrats urged the president to overturn a decision denying federal workers the legal recourse for such discrimination through the Office of Special Counsel.
One congressman says the White House response doesn't go far enough, and Democrats will urge further action.
