RI Lawmakers Discuss Gay Marriage
(Providence-AP) -- House Speaker William Murphy says he's not expecting the House to vote on bills on either side of the gay marriage issue this year.
Murphy says Attorney General Patrick Lynch's remarks on same-sex marriage have not given the issue momentum.
Yesterday, Lynch said he believes Rhode Island would recognize any marriage legally performed in another state as long as the marriage was not contrary to public policy.
However he left the definition of public policy to the General Assembly or the courts.
Murphy says there is not enough time to vote for or against same-sex marriage, and lawmakers are more focused on the budget and other things.
