Lawmakers displeased with pace of effort to give pilots guns
Capitol Hill-AP -- Some lawmakers say the agency assigned to protect airlines and passengers since Nine-Eleven is dragging its feet when it comes to arming pilots. Senator Barbara Boxer says the Transportation Security Administration has trained and armed only two percent of the 100-thousand eligible pilots. The California Democrat says of the T-S-A -- quote -- "In case they didn't notice, their job is to protect the traveling public."
Senator Jim Bunning says tens of thousands of airport screeners have been hired. But the Kentucky Republican says weapons still get through security, while -- in his words -- "grandmothers are stripped of their nail clippers."
Some passengers agree. One at New Jersey's Newark Airport says she's in favor of arming pilots, as long as there's a safety device to prevent terrorists from getting into the cockpit and stealing the weapon. But another says terrorists can act fast -- and guns might not help if pilots don't have time to reach for them.
