Second Mars rover finds signs of water on other side of planet
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

Pasadena, California-AP -- NASA says the Mars rover Spirit has discovered evidence of past water activity on the far side of the planet from the site that once may have been a salty sea.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena say Spirit has been studying a rock called Mazatzal (MAHZ'-ut-zahl) in the Gusev Crater, where evidence of water has been hard to come by.

Science team member Hap McSween says Mazatzal had three coatings, suggesting it underwent alterations having to do with fluids, possibly water. Scientists are studying microscopic and spectra photos for confirmation.

McSween says the indications are of small amounts of water in the past, possibly underground.
