Air is too dirty in hundreds of counties
Washington-AP -- The nation's E-P-A administrator says nearly 350 counties are violating U-S air standards -- and many of them aren't ready yet to fix that problem. Mike Leavitt says many of those counties are not expected to reach compliance unless additional local pollution controls are established. He spoke today to a Senate panel.
Preliminary figures show most of the polluting counties are on the eastern seaboard or in southern California.
More than 110 (m) million people live in areas with unhealthy levels of ozone. Another 65 (m) million are in areas that have too much soot in the air. The two substances -- smog and soot -- are the leading causes of severe respiratory illnesses.
