Government releases data on 2002 child abuse
Washington-AP -- A federal official calls the number of children abused and neglected each year "shockingly high." A report released today says an estimated 896-thousand children across the U-S were abused or neglected in 2002.
Assistant Health and Human Services Secretary Wade Horn says that's an average of 24-hundred children -- "each and every day."
Horn says there was "a slight decrease" from the previous year -- and a larger drop from the (m) million-child level of a decade ago.
He says the risk of abuse is higher among poor parents, those who have trouble controlling their kids, and parents who feel isolated from their communities.
Horn says the Bush administration is seeking to double the money spent on two important prevention programs.
