More than a fish - with the ability to do a push-up
Washington-AP -- Some 365 (m) million years ago, there was a creature that was more than a fish, but not quite a true amphibian. It lived in a Pennsylvania river delta. And, unlike those who preceded it, it was able to do push-ups. A researcher says an arm bone fossil from the animal points to an evolutionary step that was required as creatures dragged themselves from the sea to dry land.
Neil Shubin, with the University of Chicago, says the fossil suggests the ancient being had four legs, was two feet long, and lived in a hostile environment of predation.
In the greater historic scheme, this "tetrapod" existed for a brief moment in time, but could provide exciting new data on how organisms became land lubbers, leaving the churning oceans.
