Kerry Talks About Gay Marriage On MTV
(Washington-AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry says he believes people are born gay, but aren't guaranteed the right to marry within their own gender.
Kerry made the comments during an interview to be broadcast on M-T-V.
The Democratic presidential candidate says being gay is "who you are."
Asked why he favors civil unions instead of marriage if people are born gay, Kerry said what's different is the "institutional name" of marriage.
In a transcript released by M-T-V for its Tuesday special "Choose or Lose: 20 Million Questions for John Kerry," the presumptive Democratic nominee said he favors civil unions to give people partnership, inheritance and other rights.
President Bush supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, a measure Kerry opposes on the grounds that marriage is a state issue.
