Carpet Giant Closes
Carpet Giant has been feeling the sqeeze of local competition, and just last week realized it could no longer keep up and shut down. But customers who put deposits down are outraged, wondering whether the company took their cash knowing it would never be able to deliver.
Just last week with no notice, Carpet Giant closed down leaving only this letter on the door for it's customers...a notice they've gone into receivership.
Kelly Bienvenue, Somerset
"The store was fully stocked."
Just two days before Carpet Giant shut down, Kelly and her husband put $200 down on wall to wall carpeting for their living room.
Kelly
"He was going to come down the following Tuesday to measure the room and finalize the order"
But when Tuesday came and went with no call from Carpet Giant, Kelly called them.
Kelly
"The message on the machine said we are closed and no longer operating as a business."
That's when Kelly Called for Action.
Kelly
"I panicked! panicked! Because I talked my husband into buying a carpet and now I'm stuck with a loss of a $200 deposit!"
Allan Shine, Receiver for Carpet Giant
"My preliminary investigation shows that there was no plan, scheme, to improperly take deposits from customers.
Attorney Allan Shine has been appointed the receiver by the courts to handle Carpet Giant's liquidation. He claims the closing was a total surprise to even employees and management and that as soon as the owners realized the company could no longer operate, they stopped taking deposits.
Allan Shine
"I just think the competition has been very very difficult and the owners ran this company for 3 years but I think the competition was just too overwhelming."
Call for Action has learned that there is more than $75,000 in deposits and orders that is owed to customers and whether they will get their money back..time will tell.
Kelly
" The reason I contacted you was because I wanted to let consumers know it's better to put a deposit down on a check or a credit card."
And she's right. For those of you who did use a credit card or check, there may still be time to stop payment on that check or get the credit card company to issue a credit. Otherwise, if you have an outstanding order with Carpet Giant you should be receiving a proof of claim letter in the mail, fill it out immediately and hopefully you will get your money back.
