New England political clout threatened as population growth slows
NEW HAVEN, Conn. New census figures show that New England's political clout is threatened as population growth in the region slows. Population projections released today by the US Census Bureau project much slower growth in New England compared to the South and West.
An analysis of the numbers by the Associated Press shows that if the projections hold true, Rhode Island stands to lose one of its two congressional seats. Massachusetts would lose two of its ten seats and Connecticut would lose one of its five.
That diminished political clout threatens to make it harder for New England lawmakers to push regional issues such as transportation and home heating costs onto the national agenda.
