Ivory bill back from extinction and out of storage
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

NEW YORK The ivory-billed woodpecker lives again in the Arkansas woods. And naturalist John James Audubon's watercolor painting of the bird lives again on a museum wall.

The New-York Historical Society owns all 465 of Audubon's originals, having bought them from his widow in 1863. The ivory-billed woodpecker, which Audubon painted in 1825, hasn't been seen for 20 years.

A society official says they "didn't want our bird to go extinct."

The painting will be on display only until the 22nd of May. Then it goes into the shop for conservation.
