House approves requiring master mariner on LNG tankers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. The House has approved a measure that would require any liquefied natural gas tanker to have a master mariner on board when it comes to Rhode Island. The bill requires that an LNG certified American master mariner be present when the ships are in Rhode Island waters and while transferring their cargo.
The bill's sponsor says it's a necessary safety measure if LNG tankers come to Rhode Island.
Representative Raymond Gallison says the tankers need someone aboard who knows how to identify safety problems and is independent of the LNG company.
