Ex-Haitian national police commander agrees to plea in drug case
MIAMI Haiti's former national police commander has pleaded guilty in Miami to a pair of charges in a federal indictment accusing him of smuggling drugs and laundering money. Rudy Therassan was facing trial Monday on eight counts, but signed an agreement Wednesday admitting that he conspired to import at least 22 pounds of cocaine into the United States and that he laundered money.
Therassan and other former Haitian police officials are accused of protecting Colombian cocaine shipments through their destitute homeland.
Prosecutors say because Therassan co-operated, they'll recommend a shorter prison sentence. He could get life.
