Suspect accused of killing detective ordered held without bail
PROVIDENCE, R.I. A man accused of taking a detective's gun while being questioned -- and then killing him with it -- has been ordered held without bail. Authorities say the shooting happened while Detective James Allen was questioning the suspect at police headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island, yesterday about a stabbing. Esteban Carpio was not under arrest at the time, and had been taken out of handcuffs.
Carpio did not enter a plea to a murder charge at an arraignment today. His face appeared bruised and bloody at the court appearance. Police say he hurt himself when he jumped from a third-floor window at the police building. He was captured a few blocks away,
His family says Carpio had been trying to seek help for mental health problems.
