Statue of Liberty scheduled to reopen to public
NEW YORK The Statue of Liberty is on schedule to reopen to visitors tomorrow -- for the first time since the September Eleventh attacks. National Park Service officials say the only thing that could get in the way of their plans would be a last-minute terrorism threat.
Officials say Americans shouldn't be put off by yesterday's announcement elevating the terror threat level to orange for financial institutions in New York, New Jersey and Washington.
The reopening of the Statue of Liberty is not as dramatic as it sounds: The 152-foot copper figure itself remains sealed off to visitors.
Tourists may choose between two tours: a walk around the promenade atop the star-shaped fort on which the statue stands or an elevator ride inside the pedestal to the calf level of the figure, where there's an observation deck.
