Bishop says misinterpreted remarks causing him grief
MANCHESTER, N.H. The first openly gay Episcopal bishop says he's furious that some people are accusing him of suggesting Jesus may have been gay. The controversy stems from remarks Bishop Gene Robinson made in February at a church forum on sexual issues.
In a recording from that talk, Robinson is heard describing Jesus as single man "who traveled with a bunch of men, although there were lots of women around" and as someone "who had a disciple who was known as `the one whom Jesus loved.'"
Robinson tells a New Hampshire paper he was talking about the nuclear family and was not stating Jesus was gay.
However, some blogs and publications are questioning his intentions. And Robinson says he has been inundated with angry messages.
