LOS ANGELES Moviegoers were looking for scares this weekend.

"The Amityville Horror," a remake of a 1970s fright flick, took the number-one spot at the weekend box office with an estimated 23 (m) million dollars. It stars Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George as a couple tormented by visions and voices in their new home.

Last week's number one, "Sahara," slipped to second place with 13 (m) million dollars. "Fever Pitch" was third, followed by "Sin City." The Bernie Mac-Ashton Kutcher comedy "Guess Who" was fifth.
