RI lawmakers to consider easing liability for car leasing companies
(Providence-AP) -- The Senate today will consider a bill that could keep auto leasing companies from leaving the state.
Last month the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to limit the liability of short-term car leasing companies to 25-thousand dollars for property damage and 250-thousand dollars for death or
bodily injury involving one person.
Meanwhile, long-term leasing companies would have no liability if the vehicle operator has coverage limits of at least 50-thousand dollars for property damage and 100-thousand dollars for death or bodily injury involving one person.
If the vehicle operator has coverage below those amounts, the leasing company would be required to make up the difference.
The measure would shift the primary responsibility for crashes from lease companies to the person who leased the car.
