Smoking ban passes committee today
(Providence-AP) -- A Senate committee today unanimously approved a ban on smoking in the workplace and enclosed public places.
The vote by the Committee on Health and Human Services moves the bill to the full Senate.
Anti-smoking advocates hope support they've enjoyed in neighboring states will generate momentum in Rhode Island, where the General Assembly has resisted the idea in recent years. The
House Labor Committee in April voted down a workplace smoking ban.
Connecticut last month approved a statewide ban on smoking in bars, bowling alleys and restaurants.
The Massachusetts Senate has also approved a statewide smoking ban.
