Man Linked To The Shooting Of Sgt. Cornel Young Jr. Loses Second Appeal
The man who waved a gun during the fight that led to the fatal shooting of a Providence police officer has lost a second appeal of his sentence. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston affirmed Aldrin Diaz's sentence of ten years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The court also affirmed that Diaz's sentence can run consecutive to the 12-year state prison term he received for violating his probation. In a ruling last week, the Appeals Court said the judge who sentenced Diaz did not abuse his discretion. Sergeant Cornel Young Junior was off-duty when he ran out of a diner with his gun drawn, responding to a fight in which Diaz was involved. Young was shot by two fellow officers, who mistook him for a suspect.
