Cause Released In Historic Yacht Club Building Fire
Fire officials say an electrical fire destroyed the historic yacht club building. By the time crews arrived on the scene flames spread to all three floors and blew out the back windows. The Tiverton building did not have sprinklers.
Right now officials believe the fire started on the first floor. They add with the extent of the damage, they say the fire may have started well before they got their call just before five Tuesday morning.
Once at the building fire fighters brought the blaze under control within 45 minutes. They continued to douse the building with water at 11:30 a.m.
The building sits on a hill overlooking the Sakonnet River. It's believed to be about 150 years old and was originally a mansion. The yacht club has about 200 memberships.
