New Community Policing Plan
Monday, Providence police pitched details to the City Council on the new community policing plan. Police Chief Dean Esserman outlined the proposal for the council. It will divide the city into nine patrol districts, each headed by a lieutenant on the police force. Patrol officers under their command will then have a certain neighborhood to focus on. City leaders are hopeful the new system will help take back the streets, especially after recent violence in the state capital. The city says the plan should provide a greater police presence on the streets without increasing costs.
