WASHINGTON A panel has upheld the conclusions of an AIDS drug study in Africa despite violations of federal rules that protect patients. The study concluded that a particular drug (nevirapine) could be used safely to protect babies from AIDS.
An Institute of Medicine Panel says there were "procedural lapses," record-keeping problems, some unreported adverse events and some instances of lack of continuing consent.
But the panel says none of these problems appear to have affected the outcome of the study.
The National Institutes of Health had earlier reached the same conclusions but requested the study. The U-S Office of Human Research Protections found that the experiment in Uganda had violated numerous federal patient safety rules.
