Newport Officer Charged with Assault

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- A Newport police officer has pleaded innocent to a charge that he assaulted a man while off-duty in October. Maurice Sellers entered his plea in district court yesterday. The 28-year-old officer is accused of assaulting a 26-year-old man early on October 21st.
   Police have released few details of the alleged assault. Sellers has been on administrative duty since he was indicted by a grand jury last month. Trial was tentatively scheduled for April 12th.
