As gas prices soar, Bush prods Congress on energy
WHITE HOUSE As gas prices soar, President Bush is renewing his call for Congress to finally pass his energy bill. He's using a speech to a Hispanic business group today to make the point he made to newspaper editors last week: that it's time for lawmakers to "get off the dime."
The president's energy plan has languished in Congress for four years amid squabbling over its mix of production and conservation incentives, and environmental concerns.
Backers of a House version say it could well pass later this week. However, what the Senate will do remains a question mark.
And even Bush doesn't much like the tax breaks for oil and gas exploration that the House included. He told editors that 55-dollar-a-barrel crude should be incentive enough.
